- A Brief History Of Chiropractic
Celebrating 110 year anniversary of the profession!
- **The first recorded chiropractic adjustment was performed on September 18, 1895, by Dr. Daniel David Palmer, a Canadian-born teacher and healer. Dr. Palmer was, at the time, studying the cause and effect of disease. His patient was Harvey Lillard, a janitor working in the same building as Dr. Palmer in Davenport, Iowa. Mr. Lillard, who had complained of hearing problems for over 17 years, allowed Dr. Palmer to examine his spine. Dr. Palmer discovered a "lump" on Mr. Lillard's back and suspected that a vertebra might be out of place, which he then repositioned the vertebra with a gentle thrust. After several such treatments, much of Mr. Lillard's hearing was restored.
**Since Dr. Palmer's first chiropractic adjustment, the art and science of chiropractic has progressed tremendously. Today, advanced diagnostic procedures, sophisticated equipment, scientific research, and the growing acceptance among other health care professionals makes chiropractic a popular and effective health care choice.
- Chiropractic Philosophy
According to the doctors at Arlington Chiropractic
- **The chiropractic perspective on health and disease emphasizes two fundamental concepts:
1) The structural integrity of the body influences how the body functions and its ability to heal itself;
2) Proper nutrition, physiology and biochemistry are instrumental in maintaining health and in the healing processes.
**Although chiropractic has much in common with other health professions, its emphasis on anatomy, physiology and nutrition distinguishes it from modern medicine, whose emphasis is on drugs and surgery. Chiropractic encourages nature to take its course - by helping the body to optimize its own resources.
**Chiropractic philosophy gravitates toward a holistic ("total person") approach to healing, which combines elements of nutrition, exercise, biochemistry, physiology, psychology and other natural laws of science.
- Widespread Use of Chiropractic Care
- **The increasing interest in alternative forms of care has caught the attention of several health associations and government agencies. A 1993 study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that "The estimated number of visits made in 1990 to providers of unconventional therapy was greater than the number of visits to all primary care medical nationwide," and chiropractic was among the most frequently used alternative therapies.
**A followup report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1998 found that the use of non-medical treatments had increased significantly since the 1990 survey, with "overall prevalence of use increased by 25%, total visits by an estimated 47%, and expenditures on services provided by practitioners of alternative therapies by an estimated 45%." Of the survey respondents, one in nine (11%) had used chiropractic care within the previous year.
- BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES
A Popular Safe Idea
- **Many women are searching for safer alternatives to the synthetic drug hormones, promoted by the pharmaceutical industry, that have been in use for many years. The safety of synthetic hormones has been in question for quite some time. A large definitive study of hormones was prematurely halted in 2003, because a high percentage of women taking the synthetic drug hormones developed breast cancer, other tumors and blood clots. Later it was also shown that there was a higher incidence of Alzheimer's disease, heart disease and other abnormalities in the synthetic hormone-taking women.
**There is a currently emerging trend for women to be requesting natural bio-identical hormones to balance their hormones and prevent PMS and menopause symptoms. Bio-identical hormones are unique because they are exact duplicates of the hormones produced in a women's body (as opposed to synthetic hormones which have their chemical formulas altered so that they can be patented by the drug companies).
**Women are also finding benefit from taking other nutrients such as phytoestrogens, soy, botanicals, vitamins and minerals. Simple blood tests are available to test for nutrient levels to determine individual needs. Saliva tests are available to determine the active fraction of a patient's hormones. Based on these test results, natural prescriptions can be given to supplement deficiencies and improve or prevent symptoms.
- Treatment at Arlington Chiropractic Clinic
How is it different?
- **We have developed a unique system of healthcare which we call "Totalcare". Utilizing our "Totalcare" system allows us to evaluate our patients from various different aspects, and treat all involved body systems with the goal of more effective outcomes.
**Whether a patient comes in with back or neck pain, headaches, fatigue or for bio-identical hormones, he/she is treated in a holistic and caring and compassionate manner. The doctors and staff promote open communication to determine how best to help each individual. A thorough history and evaluation are performed, appropriate tests are recommended, and a specific treatment plan is outlined. Progress is closely monitored, to determine effectiveness of treatment or the need for referral to another physician.
**Treatment may be recommended from a wide variety of options: Spinal manipulation, massage therapy, myofascial release, nutritional support, bio-identical hormones, acupuncture, physiotherapy, rehab exercises, dietary interventions, traction or disc decompression, and others. Prescriptions may be given for any needed hospital-based tests, such as MRI, CT Scans, etc.
